Mary: the Feminine Face in God
Poem by Lwiis SALIBA, translated from Arabic by the author

Virgin, oh my sweet memory of childhood.
Companion of the path and of the long days of wandering.
Mother who saw me grow up under her protection,
Who can intercede for me one day? If not?
+++++++++++++
Mariam! Call Mary…
When the difficulties, one day, intensify.
Mariam! Call Mary…
Not a lost call, for her, not a cry.
A mother who listens to her children, is proud of them,
A mother who answers, answers their prayers.
++++++++++
Mary, my mother and Mother of God.
Mary, my dream…wonderful
Since my very first breath
You are the earth that makes us grow
With your gifts to offer us:
The dew that opens the flowers,
The beauty that calms the heart.
We all long to see you.
So we should be able
To meet in haste, your glory.
You the model we wish
For…..our achievement.
+++++++++++
You said yes, the earth sang the song of heaven.
You said yes, the heavens opened a rainbow
You said yes, the divinity bowed,
For man to unite with you.
You said yes, womanhood rose up
To unite… and God be praised!
++++++++++++++
You had a child, our blessing!
Keeping the secret until the time came.
Your silence sounded louder than the clamour.
Your silence, your wisdom spread to the world.
Your silence is the spiritual example for me
And for every seeker on the path.
A weapon for our doubts!
A companion on the way!
Teach me to keep this silence, its ardour.
Your secrets will remain ‘forever’ in my heart.
+++++++++++
Your submission, Mary, was the model
For you obeyed, you remained faithful
Until that happy day of the Annunciation,
The very day of Jesus’ crucifixion.
For you obeyed in your joy, in your sorrow
At all times you have, in your submission,
Showed your will in your acceptance
And obeyed all in your reverence.
Uniting will, united by heaven
And thy Name made Neighbour to the Lord!
++++++++++++
And the divine knows the feminine through You
Divinity ‘is’: motherhood through You,
You have thus become…
The Mother of Jesus!
The Divine Mother! The Mother of God!
And the most merciful face of woman
In you was thus manifested
In all Divinity.
